Shiatsu is a form of traditional Japanese bodywork (based on principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine). It uses thumb, finger and palm pressure as well as stretches, rotations and other massage techniques to stimulate pressure points on the body. Shiatsu can create deep relaxation of the body and mind. Shiatsu is a dynamic practice and can be energising or calming, depending on your needs. Shiatsu can help with tension, mood, sleep, stress and energy levels. Shiatsu takes physical, mental and emotional aspects of the individual in to account. To me, the beauty of shiatsu is that it can give you greater awareness and understanding of your body through assisted relaxation or from pressure being applied to certain areas. I think that a good understanding of your body, and appropriate responsiveness to it, can help to improve and maintain well-being - in my view, shiatsu is an effective way to do this.
